Trying to Decide Which Clothing Items Should be Dry Cleaned?

Published under Dry Cleaning on 05/12/2011

Often, customers tell us that they aren’t certain how to tell if an item should be laundered or dry cleaned. At the Midvale dry cleaning plant, we thought it would be a good idea to share a few guidelines with you, our customer.

The easiest method of checking whether an article should be dry cleaned or not is to simply check the label. The garment manufacturer is required by law to list the best cleaning method for the garment there. But let’s say the label is missing. Then how can you tell?

Certain fabrics will not do well when immersed in water. Some of those that are best known are wool and cashmere. These fabrics can be ruined by washing them. They lose their shape and often shrink. Another fabric that people often wonder about is silk. Some silk fabrics can be washed in water but should always be hand-washed in cool water using mild soap.

Normally, cottons and polyester fabrics can be washed. The major exception to this rule is when these fabrics are used in a man’s or woman’s suit. Normally, a men’s or women’s suit should never be washed. They will quickly lose their shape and never fit well again after being immersed in water. Always bring those in to our professional dry cleaning plant.

At Prestige Dry Cleaners of Salt Lake City, we take extra effort when pressing your suit to make sure we get all those pleats and darts crisply pressed. We used the finest dry cleaning products to remove dirt, odors and stains. Then we press the garments using just the right amount of heat so that the fabric isn’t damaged.

Certain fabrics can be washed but you must use special care when ironing them. Delicate fabrics like chiffon, satin and lace must be pressed with a cool iron and it’s best to place a thin layer of cotton like a pillow case, between the delicate fabric and the iron so that the iron never comes in direct contact with the fabric.

If you are ever uncertain about whether to wash or dry clean a garment, be sure to bring it by Prestige Dry Cleaners in Midvale, Utah. Our employees have much experience in the dry cleaning industry and most of them have been with us for years. They can quickly tell you the best cleaning method.

As they say, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Prestige Dry Cleaning only uses the finest cleaning solutions for every garment you bring in. We clean all clothing right there at our Midvale, UT site. Our dry cleaning plant has the very best cleaning machines that use the latest technology. We treat your garments with great care while they’re in our facility.

What is Perc Dry Cleaning?

Published under Dry Cleaning on 04/30/2011

Believe it or not Utah dry cleaning has been around for quite some time. The ancient Romans used ammonia as a dry cleaning solvent. More recently, a Frenchman from the 19th century, named Jean Baptiste Jolly, noticed that his tablecloth was cleaned when the maid spilled kerosene on it. This began the use of petroleum-based products to clean clothing, a term that eventually became known as “dry cleaning”.

Even though products like kerosene and gasoline did work to remove the dirt and grease from clothing, they were also flammable and this caused more than one fire over the years in early dry cleaning plants. For years, the machines used to clean garments, as well as the dry cleaning solvent itself went through an extensive evolution.

After many years of working with various petroleum based chemicals, a solvent known as tetrachloroethylene or perchloroethylene was at last discovered in the 1930’s. This dry cleaning solvent was perfect. It contained excellent cleaning power but wasn’t at all dangerous or flammable. Plus it was gentle to most fabrics. It eventually became known by the name “perc”.

Perc is normally used in large machines called Hydrocarbon or Perc Machines. Both of these are dry cleaning machines that operate much the same way. Garments are placed in a drum that fits inside a large tub. The dry cleaning solvent or “perc” is placed in the tub and during the agitation process, the solvent passes through the garments removing all dirt and grime.

The next stage is a spinning process that removes most of the perc from the fabric. After that, the clothing is dried with a stream of warm air that also removes any remaining perc from the fabric. In the last stage, a deodorizer is used on garments in order to eliminate any lingering odors from the dry cleaning solvent.

After removing the garments from the Hydrocarbon or Perc Machine, each garment is carefully inspected to make sure no buttons are missing and that all stains have been removed. The last phase of the cleaning process is pressing the garment on an industrial pressing machine. These types of machines can get the wrinkles out that a household iron will miss.

At Prestige Dry Cleaners, we utilize our own very efficient system of identifying and tracking each garment that comes to us. We’ve learned a few things over the years and we know that the number one complaint people have is that their clothing is lost during the dry cleaning process. We believe our barcode tracking system is virtually fool proof and we rarely ever misplace a garment in spite of the many thousands that we clean each week.

The friendly SLC Dry Cleaning team at Prestige Dry Cleaners works hard to ensure that your clothes will be picked up and delivered in an efficient, timely manner. While we have your clothing in our plant, we feel responsible to make sure they are cleaned and pressed properly.

We believe that’s why Prestige is the Number One dry cleaning facility in Midvale, Utah. We care about our customers and we give you quality customer service and excellent cleaning and laundry services at an exceptional price.

What is a Dry Cleaning Solvent?

Published under Dry Cleaning on 04/27/2011

Most people don’t know much about how their clothes get treated at local Salt Lake City dry cleaners. All they know is that if a garment says “Dry Clean Only” and you actually wash it in water, you’ll ruin it.

Certain fabrics such as wool, silk and rayon will shrink or change colors if they are washed in water. Dry cleaning solvents remove the dirt without ruining the fabric. The most common type of dry cleaning solvent used these days is called perchlorethylene or “perc” for short.

Most Utah dry cleaners like Prestige Dry Cleaners, clothes are placed in a machine that basically washes and dries them using the dry cleaning solvent. This is a process with several steps. Clothes are placed in a drum, perc is added to an outer container known as a “cage” that holds the drum and then the clothes are agitated so that the perc passes through the fabric removing dirt and stains.

It’s important for the perc to be kept at or below 86 degrees Fahrenheit. It the product warms above that temperature, clothing can be damaged. Throughout the wash cycle, the dry cleaning solvent passes through the fabric and back into the cage. The solvent is then removed from the clothing and the drum. This is known as the wash cycle and it takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.

At the end of the wash cycle, fresh distilled solvent is added to rinse the clothing. At the end of this process, the machine begins extracting the solvent from the clothing by spinning the clothes much like a regular washing machine does. Most modern dry cleaning machines can remove up to 99% of the solvent.

Once most of the dry cleaning solvent has been removed from garments, they are dried with a warm stream of air that evaporates any solvent left in the fabric. At the end of the drying cycle, a deodorizing cycle begins and cools the garments down, removing just about all traces of the solvent. Now the garments are clean and ready for pressing.

The final stage at Prestige Dry Cleaners is when highly trained pros using commercial pressing equipment iron all the wrinkles out at just the right temperature to give the garment a beautiful freshly pressed look while protecting it from any harm. Pressing a garment at too high a temperature can ruin it. The pros at Prestige get it right every time.

Most Midvale dry cleaners use a very modern system to track each article of clothing so that none gets lost. Each garment in your yellow bag has its own bar code that is scanned into our system. Once each item has been cleaned, it is scanned in again and placed together with the other garments in your order.

Our customers know us as a friendly SLC dry cleaning service that offers great service at low prices. We’re also known as the dry cleaning company that picks up and delivers. We’ve worked hard to earn the trust of local residents in the Midvale, Utah area and we are proud of our excellent reputation.

Dry Cleaning Equipment and Prestige Dry Cleaners

Published under Dry Cleaning on 04/21/2011

Prestige Dry Cleaners, one of Salt Lake City dry cleaners doesn’t have to use the best dry cleaning equipment around but we do. We believe in giving our customers exceptional service and we can only do that if we are the best in the business. For over a decade, Prestige has been serving the citizens of Midvale, Utah with quality dry cleaning services.

Prestige Dry Cleaning has grown over the past ten years to be one of the best Utah dry cleaning companies. We’ve expanded our service area and our range of services. We’ve also streamlined our process. From the time we pick up your “Yellow Bag” to the time we deliver your freshly cleaned and pressed clothing back to your door, we feel a sense of pride and a responsibility to give you excellent products and services.

One of the ways we can assure our customers the highest quality cleaning for their garments and household items like comforters is to make certain that we are using the latest dry cleaning equipment. Most folks don’t know much about what really happens behind closed doors at a dry cleaning facility, so let’s take a quick tour of the place.

Prestige Dry Cleaners does all their own cleaning and laundry work on site right at their Midvale dry cleaning facility. There we have a large variety of machines that extract dirt and press clothing. One of those machines is called a Washer-Extractor. This is a bulky looking oversized washing machine that will hold 160 pounds of clothing. We keep it busy too, washing your shirts, jeans, comforters, and the like.

Once your shirts and jeans are clean, they are pressed on specially designed forms that have been made to the shape of the garment. We have a curved form-board just for those shirt collars. That’s how we get them so perfect every time. We also have one just for jeans and pants. We can get flawless creases in any type of pants or jeans.

Two other valuable pieces of equipment that we use a lot at Prestige Dry Cleaners are the Hydrocarbon Machine and the Perc Machine. These are both utilized in the dry cleaning process. Garments are placed in a large drum and then the cleaning fluid, also known as “perc” is placed in the outter shell that holds the drum. As the drum agitates, the cleaning fluid passes through your garments picking up all dirt and grease on its way.

Once the garments are clean, they are spun just like in your washing machine, to remove most of the perc from the fabric. After a steam drying, which is also done inside this machine, your clothes are then deodorized which removes any lingering smells or traces of cleaning fluid.

After that, it’s just a matter of pressing each garment to where it’s perfect. Our team of pros at Prestige Dry Cleaners even checks while pressing to make sure that your buttons and snaps are all there and working properly. We take pride in giving our customers the very best service possible. We even offer a Prestige Points Loyalty Program so you can get free dry cleaning.

We believe that we are the best at what we do because we care. Our customers become like family to us and we strive to give them excellent work at a fair price. In fact, they rave about our exceptional service. These may seem like old-timey values to some but we have discovered over the years that friendly customer service and quality work never go out of style.

A little Knowledge Goes a Long Way

Published under Dry Cleaning on 04/04/2011

It’s always much better to take a seat and read some kind of instruction before you start doing something. This seems easier said than done sometimes, why? Because we think it might take more time. In a way it does, but take into account that you have a higher chance to mess up. What am I talking about, have you ever thrown your colored clothes in with your whites? I have and that is a big mistake; and wished I could take that one moment of idiocy away. Read some kind of instruction so that I wouldn’t have to go through that costly mess.

Clothes can be very expensive and it goes through a brutal ordeal being worn constantly, and coming in contact with foreign objects and food all the time. So we throw it in the wash and then soon enough it’s color starts fading away, then starts ripping and soon it is used as a rag. Ok maybe the story was a little extreme but it does happen over time our favorite clothes we wear get battered and torn and we can no longer wear it. So the question is what can you do to keep your favorite clothes from wearing and tearing so fast?

A simple way that is very effective as professional Midvale, UT dry cleaning. Before you start arguing with me, ask yourself if you have you ever shrunk your clothes, or bleached clothes that weren’t supposed to be bleached? This is why people go to professional Salt Lake City dry cleaners with their important clothes, because they are professionals that have been trained to know exactly what to do to make your clothes feel and look brand new. If they really didn’t work people would stop going to them ages ago.

To know if your clothes really need to go to the dry cleaners look at the tags. Usually the tags are located on the inside of the clothing. They have a symbols and instructions that tell you exactly what needs to be dried or washed. Before throwing your clothing into the wash make sure what it says; some say to hand wash, others that can’t be put in a dryer, while others may require to be taken to a professional dry cleaner.

So what’s the difference between dry cleaning and wet cleaning? Wet cleaning means hand-washing or putting it into a machine that uses detergent soaps and shampoos.  Some fabrics need special care because they do not work well with regular detergents either they don’t work or they may be to strong and can destroy the material.

At Prestige Cleaners they give wonderful tips on how to get stains out or what you shouldn’t do with your clothes. As a Utah dry cleaning company they provide excellent service and can do miracles with your clothes.  They provide wonderful and insightful information to help others more on keeping their clothes in pristine condition much longer.

Taking the Time to Know Laundry Day

Published under Dry Cleaning on 04/01/2011

Laundry day, the most exciting day of the week, right? Well it’s surprising the many things we don’t know about that have to do with the activities of laundry. For example one useful tool that has been revolutionary in cleaning is steam. Steam is a gas that is very useful in cleaning due to its effectiveness in being gentle with the clothing while penetrating hard to remove stains. How it works is that due to the high boiling temperature of water it turns into a gas which dehydrates and breaks the bond of stains and dirt and boom, it’s clean once again. Steam is also used in irons to take out wrinkles in the fabric. Steam is a wonderful resource to use and has many applications and does an effective and efficient job.

When you take your clothes to the dry cleaners it is a little bit different then just using steam. In most cases we use water to be the solvent in cleaning however some materials do not react well with it or cannot remove the particular stain easily. Therefore dry cleaners use a petroleum solvent which would clean clothes. Recently they have changed the solvent from kerosene or gasoline which was highly flammable and a huge hazard for customers they have found a universal solvent called perchloroethylene. The cool thing about using a professional Midvale dry cleaners is that they continually us the solvent by having an extractor which recovers the solvent to be reused on the clothes once again.

A very common question people have when they buy their clothes is, “Why do some clothes require to be washed before wearing?” Particularly manufacturers put dye’s and chemicals on them to make them look better or also they will use formaldehyde to treat clothes to prevent mildew due to a long trip being shipped to another place.

Be aware that formaldehyde is a chemical that can cause allergic reactions in people who have sensitive skin; the chemical usually gives of a pungent odor before it’s washed.  That’s why it’s necessary to check the tag and see if it requires washing before wear.  Especially baby clothing; babies are more at risk to receive a rash from clothing because of their sensitive skin.  Washing new items will make them softer and more comfortable to wear.

To get more valuable information on how to protect your clothing or how to remove stains from a certain material Salt Lake City dry cleaners deliver quality explanations and know how to get you where you want to be. Prestige Cleaners gives valuable information that can help with any particular question that you might have.  As a Utah dry cleaning company they truly care that you are provided with the right information so nothing happens to you that you don’t want to happen.
