Never trust a dry cleaner who keeps only
one type of stain remover in the back.

At Prestige Cleaners, we keep several different kinds on hand, and we know how to use each one.

It only sounds like overkill. It’s necessary because every kind of stain has its own peculiarities. For salsa, you need one kind of stain remover. For gravy, you need another. You need yet another for coffee. (Coffee, by the way, is not something we recommend spilling on clothes. We’ll do our best with it, of course. But coffee is so permanent, it is used as a fabric dye.)

But there’s more to it than that. You also need to how to handle each type of fabric, and each type of fabric finish. And you need to know how each type of stain remover behaves on different fabrics and finishes. A stain remover that’s perfect for removing gravy from one kind of fabric may be harmful to another kind of fabric.

Just to make things more complicated, clothing manufacturers often put incorrect handling instructions on clothing tags. To be great at spot removal, you have to know when to believe what the tag says, and when to overrule it.

Which means that to remove stains effectively and safely, you need to know your stuff. That’s why we don’t turn new employees loose on stains. We keep up on the science, and teach it to our most experienced people only, some of whom have been with us for years. So when you bring us a stain, you can relax. You’ll know that the person who works on it is thoroughly trained and experienced on the science of stain removal and fabric care.

Hangerless upon request

Hangers?
Some people prefer not to be left hanging

Most people love getting their freshly cleaned and pressed shirts delivered to them on hangers, ready to place in the closet. But if you’d rather have your shirts folded instead, we’re OK with that. In fact, “OK with it” is an understatement. We’re really good at it.

Just ask, and we’ll deliver your shirts gently folded. If you’d like us to go one better, we’ll even nestle them inside a specially-made shirt box. It’s pretty much the way a fine clothier wraps up a brand new shirt, without the annoying pins.

Boxed shirts are easy to pack, which makes this service a favorite of business travelers. Folded shirts are also great if you prefer to place shirts in a drawer.

Want your shirts folded and boxed instead of placed on hangers? Just ask!

What you never want to overhear anyone say about you

Published under Dry Cleaning on 08/21/2013

SS16100

One of our people overheard this conversation between two business people at lunch. And cringed.

“He washes and irons his own shirts,” one said. The other one chuckled and said, “It shows.”

It’s arguably unfair, but it’s a workplace reality. Sometimes perfectly competent people are passed over for opportunities because the other candidate simply happens to look sharper. Yet fixing the problem isn’t hard. Let the experts at Prestige Cleaners professionally launder and press your shirts.

The difference in look between a shirt washed and pressed at home and one that has been professionally laundered at Prestige Cleaners—it doesn’t take a trained eye to see it—is nothing short of amazing. Plus, it’s way easier for you than washing and ironing at home. (There’s a good chance it’s easier on the shirts, too, thanks to our state-of-the-art washers and dryers, and the gentle, eco-friendly products we use.)

Another arguably unfair workplace reality is that many bosses are more prone to criticize than to praise. So the boss may say nothing at all when you look sharp. Still, you can bet he or she will notice.

We’ll gladly recycle those hangers

Published under Dry Cleaning on 08/07/2013

Unless you request us to fold and box your clothes, we return them to you on hangers. Now, we realize that it doesn’t take long for all those hangers to pile up. Instead of tossing them in the trash, which adds them to the landfill, why not let us recycle them for you?

Make no mistake: it’s easier for us to buy new hangers than to wrestle apart a tangle of returned ones. But then, we don’t want hangers clogging up the landfill any more than you do. One hanger may not seem like much, but if you multiply one hanger times 3.5 billion, that is much. According to an article in CanadaFreePress.com, 3.5 billion is exactly how many hangers end up in North American landfills each year. And it’s totally unnecessary. Unless you are in the habit of soaking your hangers in battery acid, there is no reason they cannot be reused.

Many Prestige Cleaners customers return their hangers as a matter of practice. Why not join them? Just place them in your unmistakably yellow Prestige Cleaners bag for us to pick up with your next order. Back at our facility, we’ll gladly pry the tangle apart. It’s one more way we can all do our part.

Another myth laid to rest (we hope)

Published under Dry Cleaning on 07/26/2013

Ever had some killjoy try to scare you by telling you that professional laundering and dry cleaning are bad for clothes? Let’s dispatch that myth right now.

Failure to thoroughly remove dirt, stains and sweat—that’s what’s bad for clothes.

Professional dry cleaning and laundering have been shown to remove dirt, stains, and sweat a lot more thoroughly than you could possibly do at home. You should be glad about that, for a few reasons. For one thing, dirt, stains, and sweat are germ colonies. We’re not talking just a few germs. If you could see the germs living the good life where you spilled or sweated, you would’t dream of not having a professional cleaner get rid of them. For another, think about what dirt really is. It may look like a powder, but those tiny particles aren’t as smooth as they look. If you could see them up close, you’d see that they have edges, lots of them, and almost all of them are sharp. They wear against fiber like sandpaper. All of which means that, unless you like weak spots and holes, dirt isn’t something you really want hanging around among the fibers of your clothes.

As for stains, they can be tricky. They can appear gone to the naked eye, while in reality remain behind in the form of invisible residues. These can yellow with time, or reappear when you iron. That’s why we train people on stain removal. Really. We don’t unleash just any employee on stains. It takes specialized knowledge and experience.

Ready for some good news? Studies show that by removing dirt, sweat, and stains, professional care actually helps clothes last longer. And, by the way, professional care is what clothing always receives at Prestige Cleaners.

If your pickup/dropoff day falls on Pioneer Day

Published under Dry Cleaning on 07/18/2013

Wednesday, July 24, is a holiday.
What if it’s also your Prestige Cleaners pickup/dropoff day?

If you have lived in Utah for more than a few minutes, you probably know that Utahns get a bonus holiday in July. Namely, Pioneer Day. Like many local businesses, we close on Pioneer Day so our employees can enjoy a little well-earned time off with their families.

If your Prestige Cleaners pickup/dropoff day happens to fall on Wednesday, July 24, we won’t be stopping by on that day. We will be back in your neighborhood a few days later, on Saturday, July 27, as usual. Of course, any items you place outside for pickup this Saturday (the 20th) or bring to our store (7301 South 900 East) by 10 a.m. on Tuesday the 23rd will be cleaned, pressed, and delivered back to you on Saturday, July 27.

For your reference, these are the holidays we observe:

New Year’s Day
Memorial Day
4th of July
24th of July
Labor Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas (In 2013, that’ll be December 24-26)

Careful! The wrong cleaning method can ruin clothes.

Published under Dry Cleaning on 06/30/2013

You know the expression “Don’t try this at home?” It applies to stains in a big way.

When you bring a clothing stain to Prestige Cleaners, we don’t turn just anyone loose on it. Yeah, yeah, everyone brags that they have so-called “trained professionals,” but it’s a fact at Prestige. When you see someone working on a stain at Prestige, you can bet he or she has worked with us for a long, long time. No one at Prestige is allowed to work on stains without having demonstrated the ability to:

• Identify fabric types, label or no label
• Recognize stain types by sight
• Know when and when not to believe what a label says (scary but true: many manufacturers’ labels are simply wrong)
• Know which kind of cleaning solutions work with which kinds of stains on which kinds of fabrics
• Master stain removal with no or minimal damage to fabric
• Operate a steam gun with just the right touch (too little is ineffective or makes things worse; too much burns fabric) … and more.

Though now and then a stain proves too stubborn to remove, you’d be surprised at the number of stain types we can remove. Got a stain you’d like us to give special attention? Be sure to drop a note in your bag.
