Most people don’t know much about how their clothes get treated at local Salt Lake City dry cleaners. All they know is that if a garment says “Dry Clean Only” and you actually wash it in water, you’ll ruin it.

Certain fabrics such as wool, silk and rayon will shrink or change colors if they are washed in water. Dry cleaning solvents remove the dirt without ruining the fabric. The most common type of dry cleaning solvent used these days is called perchlorethylene or “perc” for short.

Most Utah dry cleaners like Prestige Dry Cleaners, clothes are placed in a machine that basically washes and dries them using the dry cleaning solvent. This is a process with several steps. Clothes are placed in a drum, perc is added to an outer container known as a “cage” that holds the drum and then the clothes are agitated so that the perc passes through the fabric removing dirt and stains.

It’s important for the perc to be kept at or below 86 degrees Fahrenheit. It the product warms above that temperature, clothing can be damaged. Throughout the wash cycle, the dry cleaning solvent passes through the fabric and back into the cage. The solvent is then removed from the clothing and the drum. This is known as the wash cycle and it takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.

At the end of the wash cycle, fresh distilled solvent is added to rinse the clothing. At the end of this process, the machine begins extracting the solvent from the clothing by spinning the clothes much like a regular washing machine does. Most modern dry cleaning machines can remove up to 99% of the solvent.

Once most of the dry cleaning solvent has been removed from garments, they are dried with a warm stream of air that evaporates any solvent left in the fabric. At the end of the drying cycle, a deodorizing cycle begins and cools the garments down, removing just about all traces of the solvent. Now the garments are clean and ready for pressing.

The final stage at Prestige Dry Cleaners is when highly trained pros using commercial pressing equipment iron all the wrinkles out at just the right temperature to give the garment a beautiful freshly pressed look while protecting it from any harm. Pressing a garment at too high a temperature can ruin it. The pros at Prestige get it right every time.

Most Midvale dry cleaners use a very modern system to track each article of clothing so that none gets lost. Each garment in your yellow bag has its own bar code that is scanned into our system.
