Often, customers tell us that they aren’t certain how to tell if an item should be laundered or dry cleaned. At the Midvale dry cleaning plant, we thought it would be a good idea to share a few guidelines with you, our customer.
The easiest method of checking whether an article should be dry cleaned or not is to simply check the label. The garment manufacturer is required by law to list the best cleaning method for the garment there. But let’s say the label is missing. Then how can you tell?
Certain fabrics will not do well when immersed in water. Some of those that are best known are wool and cashmere. These fabrics can be ruined by washing them. They lose their shape and often shrink. Another fabric that people often wonder about is silk. Some silk fabrics can be washed in water but should always be hand-washed in cool water using mild soap.
Normally, cottons and polyester fabrics can be washed. The major exception to this rule is when these fabrics are used in a man’s or woman’s suit. Normally, a men’s or women’s suit should never be washed. They will quickly lose their shape and never fit well again after being immersed in water. Always bring those in to our professional dry cleaning plant.

Certain fabrics can be washed but you must use special care when ironing them. Delicate fabrics like chiffon, satin and lace must be pressed with a cool iron and it’s best to place a thin layer of cotton like a pillow case, between the delicate fabric and the iron so that the iron never comes in direct contact with the fabric.
